The Myth of Native Desolation applied to DACA Rescission

Thus far in winter quarter, our main focus in Humanities Core has been the Spanish Conquest of the Inca empire. Coincidentally, I think what we have learned from examining the myths of this part of history can be directly applied to history taking place now. Currently our government is in shutdown as the Senate Democrats and Republicans face off over the DACA issue.

DACA was formed under President Obama to allow undocumented minors deferred action from deportation. Now under President Trump, it has has been rescinded. DACA supports around 800,000 youths who are now facing deportation, children who have grown up with the United States as their home. With the kind of impact this rescission will have on so many young lives, it is no wonder Democrats are forcing Trump to come up with a solution.

If we apply what we have learned from Humanities Core these last two weeks, it is important that we look at the myths about DACA from both sides. Who is writing history right now and can we trust what they are saying?

This article from CNN debunks 5 major myths of DACA. While many are concerned with the impact of such immigration programs on legal citizens, when one actually takes time to investigate it is found that many of these claims are false. In fact, DACA has had positive impacts on the American economy and shortage of workers. They are not taking jobs from legal citizens, they are not exempt from paying taxes- they are every much acting as a part of American society as those born here.
